TECHNICAL SAFETY AND RISK

Ward against uncertainty and hazardous outcomes

Technical, safety and risk (TSR) identifies, assesses and mitigates major accident hazards and risks, reliability and operational performance associated with energy projects and facility operations. TSR combines many different specialisms and has a diversely skilled team providing support and adding value to clients. The work we do is often associated with high risks, and consequently is high impact in delivering benefits to safety and operational performance.

Our globally integrated team has a broad portfolio with specialisms within the experienced team include safety engineering, operational performance, RAM (reliability, availability, maintainability), safety and environmental systems and audit, human factors and human performance, asset integrity assurance, value, decision and risk management.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

Our experience covers a complete range of project phases from concept select, through FEED, EPC and beyond into operational support and decommissioning.

Similarly, we can leverage knowledge from onshore, offshore and subsea environments, from diverse technologies including oil, gas, LNG, hydrogen, carbon capture, wind and tidal generation and work within varied regulatory regimes to bring forward best-fit solutions. This breadth informs everything we do with a holistic mindset to lifecycle risk, drawing the risks that can be experienced in construction and operational phases back into design and using that understanding to inform development and optimisation.

We tailor delivery to the requirement, be that early light-touch HAZID (Hazard Identification) workshops, detailed IEC 61508/61511 lifecycle treatment from LOPA (Layers of Protection Analysis) through SECE (Safety & Environmental Critical Element) identification, SIF (Safety Instrumented Function) specification and Performance Standard development, or support through RBI (Risk Based Inspection) and SRA (Schedule Risk Analysis). We are as diversely capable as we are acronym rich.

OPERATIONS SUPPORT

TSR aims to relieve the stresses of the operational phase of an asset by providing expert guidance and support.

When investigation and remediation is required, TSR supports clients in ensuring risk is properly managed, including incident and root cause analysis. This may include updates to existing safety studies – such as updated HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA updates or SIL re-validation and verification. Instead it could be focused more on the improvement of performance, and therefore revenue and profit, through RAM studies such as failure modes and effects analysis, RAM modelling, fault tree analysis or maintenance strategizing.

We pride ourselves in being able to take a view on a client’s existing processes, data and outputs, and delivering value-adding solutions. Often this will require cross-disciplinary collaboration from both client and ourselves – something we feel is a strength of our company ethos. We also look to leverage digital solutions where possible and encourage the move away from the model of data silos to a more collaborative single source of truth approach. This is underpinned by our ongoing development and implementation of the Xodus Asset Management & Integrity Network (XAMIN).

DECOMMISSIONING

We can assist with the risk understanding of options and regulatory implications. We develop bespoke risk assessments and ALARP justifications for the often short-term and temporary variant working facility states which can exist in the transition towards decommissioning.

We can also apply our understanding to the risks of the decommissioning operations themselves, which can often involve some of the more hazardous activities, such as heavy and super heavy lifts, hot works and cutting, diving and complex inter-vessel SIMOPs. We work closely with our colleagues in the decommissioning team and have expertise in the execution of decommissioning schedule risk assessments.
